The Good Merger Index

Good Merger Index

The Good Merger Index is our annual survey of consolidation activity in the not-for-profit sector, the first of its kind. It is intended both to help individual organisations understand more about what can be a sensitive issue and to inform debate around mergers and partnerships sector-wide.

Published regularly, it draws on more than 1,400 capacity-building assignments and the experiences of 120 Eastside Primetimers consultants located across the UK.

The 2020/21 report features data on data on charity and social enterprise mergers in the year of 2020/21 and also provides a look at the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sector. During the year we identified 77 mergers identified involving 166 organisations, with a year-on-year rise in the number of small organisations involved and takeovers at their highest level. At the same time, we saw a marked fall in the number of larger, more complex mergers. As with previous years, we have supplemented our report with some case studies. This year we look at three mergers that were undertaken after careful consideration for how the organisations involved could improve their sustainability  and impact. These mergers were conceived well before the pandemic and completed despite its additional challenges. They demonstrate both the investment in time and energy required, but also the fantastic outcomes achieved.

In our interactions with hundreds of organisations, providing support in governance, strategy and business planning, we have learned that not just merger, but closer partnership working and collaboration may also provide valuable opportunities for charities and social enterprises to increase their impact, whilst driving efficiencies.
