Charity: Bolton Destitute Animals Shelter

Location: Bolton, BL3 6NJ

We are looking for an interim Charity Manager to work with a local animal rescue charity in Bolton, Bolton Destitute Animals Shelter.  The charity helps love and rehome over 450 animals per year. They are in the process of a significant organisational change programme, which involves reviewing their organisational purpose, developing their long-term strategy, and embedding good governance and leadership.

To aid the process, we are looking for an interim Charity Manager to lead on both the change programme, ensuring that all staff and volunteers are engaged in the development work and that it progresses in accordance with the project timelines. As well as, acting on behalf of the board to implement good practice across the organisation, including people management, financial processing, health & safety, and maintaining building standards.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Acting as project lead (client side) and working closely with the consultants to prepare staff and volunteers for workshops, support availability of staff and volunteers for research interviews, prepare papers for committee meetings, and take responsibility for ensuring the project timelines are met.
  • With the support from external consultants, developing and embedding organisational policies and procedures, aimed to improve governance oversight and inspirational leadership within the organisation.
  • Overall responsibility for the successful day-to-day running of the charity, covering both animal welfare operations and corporate functions.
  • Reporting into the Board of Trustees and line-management of the current management team.
  • With the support from the Treasurer, develop an operational budget and provide regular reporting against performance to the Board.

Person Specification 

  • Excellent change management skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative and problem solve with limited oversight
  • Strong crisis management skills and developing pragmatic solutions
  • Strong, empathetic people manager, with the ability to inspire others
  • Previous experience of developing strategy through co-creation
  • Experience of leading a not-for-profit organisation, preferably in a small or medium sized charity setting
  • Ability to develop and manage budgets

The interim role is to start in August, initially for 6 months, either on a full time basis, or 4 days a week.  We are looking for someone who can work mostly onsite, though 1-2 days per week could be worked remotely.
