John Mark Williams Eastside People NED Non Executive Director and appointed CEO of The Institute of Leadership

John Mark Williams

Eastside People Non Executive Director and CEO, The Institute of Leadership

I have a deep and abiding passion for promoting social mobility. The idea that we can – and should – open up opportunities for people despite disadvantage is hugely motivational. Helping to facilitate that by supporting development and performance of charity leaders is a fulfilling and rewarding cause.

Key Skills/Consultancy Specialisms:

  • Strategy
  • Leadership Development
  • Innovation
  • Change Management
  • Business Agility

I helped set up a charity many years ago, and have been a trustee of several charities since. I have seen at first hand the value of helping charity leaders to make the most of their capacity, and to maintain focus on their impact. We live in a world where formal support structures are stretched almost to breaking. Efficient and effective charities hold out hope of sustaining social and economic cohesion at a human and personal level. As a non-executive director at Eastside People, I want to offer knowledge, experience, ideas, and networks in support of those non-profit organisations who value the help that Eastside People brings.

Other than charity-related work, my career has been varied. I was appointed CEO of The Institute of Leadership in September 2020, following a number of CEO and Director roles in the UK, Middle East and Far East. I am currently a Global Advisory Board member for the Commonwealth Enterprise & Investment Council, and a member of the Strategy Group for the Club of Three. I have been a Diversity Champion for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, and a consultant for the Cabinet Office on strategy and leadership for non-profit organisations.

I have been a guest lecturer on Strategy and Leadership at universities in the UK and Europe for many years. I occasionally write about business for online publications, and outside of work has qualifications in sports psychology and sports massage. My interests include mountain biking, coaching reluctant marathon runners, and writing articles about arcane economic issues for which I am dubiously – if at all – qualified.
