Gambling with Lives: Charity Interim CEO Recruitment Case Study

Eastside People

Gambling with Lives Logo Eastside People

Eastside People helped Gambling with Lives recruit an Interim CEO at a crucial stage in the charity’s development.

Eastside PeGambling with Lives Interim CEO Case Study

Summary

  • Recruitment of an Interim CEO
  • Project Duration: 6 months (including conversion to permanent role)

Background

Every day someone in the UK takes their life because of gambling. Gambling with Lives (GwL), was set up in 2018 by families bereaved by gambling-related suicide. The charity provides support to families, raises awareness of gambling disorder’s devastating effects and campaigns for change. It also develops innovative programmes around supporting bereaved families, education provision, information and research. Since its creation it has had a remarkable impact on the discourse around the dangers of gambling and the case for gambling reform.

Before Gambling with Lives, there was little recognition of the link between gambling disorders and suicide. The charity’s founders have become central to the case for gambling reform and were instrumental in campaigning for the review of gambling legislation in the UK which was announced at the end of 2020 which has resulted in a Digital Age Gambling Reform White Paper that sets out the government’s plan for reform of gambling regulation following the review of the Gambling Act 2005.

I would thoroughly recommend Eastside People's recruitment service to any organisation wishing to hire great candidates with the right skills and relevant experience.

Solution

Gambling with Lives came to Eastside People because they were on the verge of securing new funding required to take the organisation to the next level but needed fresh resource to make that happen. The founders were running the organisation day-to-day and were looking for support to build up the capacity of the charity. This person would need to come in quickly and operate at a senior level. The role also required someone who could project manage and make huge changes at a crucial stage in the charity’s development.

Eastside People interviewed four candidates for the role. The appointed candidate was an experienced interim manager, consultant and CEO, with a track record in community healthcare, addiction rehabilitation and supported housing. Throughout his career, he had supported clients to develop innovative and effective solutions to some of society’s most pressing issues, with an emphasis on marrying commercial and social approaches.

The appointment went well, so much so that the appointee – Will Prochaska – became the permanent CEO (and now Strategy Director). The charity continues to go from strength to strength.

Since successfully leading the recruitment programme for this role, Eastside People has also worked with Gambling with Lives to recruit interim managers for Project Leader and Project Director roles, a permanent Head of External Affairs and a Head of Fundraising and a Director of Operations and People.
