Independent Chair

Charity: The Partnership of Counselling and Psychotherapy Bodies (PCPB)

Location: Remote with occasional meetings in London

Role Type: Board

Work Type: Remote

Salary: £10,000 per annum

Closing Date: 02 February 2026

Time Commitment: approximately 2.5 days per month.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Are you looking for an impactful role? One offering the chance to make a real contribution to the future of the counselling and psychotherapy profession? We are searching for a new Independent Chair to join us!

This is a complex role, leading and supporting a collaboration fuelled by the resources and energy of the partner organisations. We are looking for someone who can help us navigate competing demands in the interests of the bigger picture, to help us learn from other professional and international contexts, and to win recognition and support from a range of stakeholders.

If this sounds like the right opportunity for you, then we’d love to hear from you.

WHO ARE PCPB?

We are The Partnership of Counselling and Psychotherapy Bodies. The PCPB is a group of six leading organisations committed to ensuring that the counselling and psychotherapy profession is trusted, respected and more widely understood by members of the public.

WHAT MATTERS TO US

Driving strategic initiatives aimed at improving professional standards, building public confidence and enhancing the professional identity of practitioners are at the core of what we do. We are also committed to promoting greater diversity within the field and fostering inclusivity across the profession.

IF YOU JOIN US…

You’ll have the chance to take on a unique and exciting role, offering the chance to make a real contribution to the future of the counselling and psychotherapy profession.

This role is flexible, with remote meetings and the occasional one in London and can work well around other commitments.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

This is a key role for the PCPB requiring effective and inclusive leadership and serving as a visible ambassador for the partnership, while building and sustaining strong relationships with external stakeholders.

We are particularly looking for:

  • a strategic thinker with excellent relationship-building skills
  • an understanding of regulation or professional standards
  • experience in inclusive leadership and decision-making

This is an independent role, and applicants cannot be a current member of a counselling or psychotherapy body.  We particularly welcome applications from individuals outside the counselling, psychotherapy, and wider mental health professions in order to support full independence and facilitate the strategic nature of the PCPB’s work.

Please make sure you read our Candidate Information Pack before applying, as it contains important details about the role and the requirements.

Don’t think you quite meet all the specifications? Please don’t count yourself out. We’d still love to learn more about your interest in working with the PCPB.

If you would like a call to discuss the role or any of the content of this pack in more detail, please email Bernice Rook to arrange a convenient time at [email protected]. Having a call of this kind will not influence the success or otherwise of your application.

We want you to have every opportunity to demonstrate your skills, ability and potential. If you have a disability or require reasonable adjustments during the application or interview process, please contact us so we can support you appropriately.

How to apply

Eastside People is supporting the PCPB in the recruitment of this role. You can apply today by submitting your CV and a cover letter, both in Word doc format.

Please use the cover letter (max 2 pages) as an opportunity to add to the information you have shared in your CV and ensure that you cover the following:
○ Why are you interested in the PCPB Independent Chair role?
○ Can you share an example of leading a complex, multi-stakeholder organisation or board through a period of strategic change?
○ How do you approach building consensus and managing conflict in high-level boards or committees?

You are welcome to send your cover letter in writing, or as a video or audio clip, alongside your CV. Any video or audio submissions should be emailed to [email protected].

The closing date for applications is Monday 2 Feb. Longlisting interviews with Eastside People will take place shortly after and shortlisted candidates will have an interview with the PCPB panel during the week commencing 16 Feb.

We actively welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, and lived experiences. We strive to reflect the diversity of the communities we serve and are committed to equity and inclusion at every level of our governance.

We acknowledge every application. You’ll always hear from us after taking the time to apply - we look forward to hearing from you!
